Keeping Kosher at Penn

Penn Dining operates the premiere kosher dining facility in Philadelphia. All food is Glatt Kosher and prepared under the supervision of the Community Kashrus of Greater Philadelphia. We welcome Penn students as well as members of the surrounding community to enjoy the amazing cuisine and sense of community that you will experience when you dine in Falk Dining Commons.

Falk Dining Commons serves weekly Shabbat dinner to the entire Penn Community, as well as visitors to University City. Falk Dining serves dinner, starting one hour after Candle Lighting takes place. Shabbat lunch is served on Saturdays at 11:30 AM.

Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays are meat days. Tuesday and Thursdays are dairy days.

ANNOUCEMENT OF NEW KOSHER DINING

March 20, 2013

To the Penn Community,

Yesterday, a letter went out from our student community announcing changes in the kosher dining program for Academic Year 2013-2014. These changes were a result of over a year’s worth of discussion by Hillel and Business Services to design a new and convenient Kosher program that will continue to offer amazing kosher food as well as a vibrant community experience. The past model for Kosher dining, while it provided wonderful food and community, was not economically sustainable. Much work by both Hillel and Penn Dining went into creating a new program that will ensure that Kosher dining at Penn will continue for years to come.

Here are some details about the changes:

• Falk Dining Commons will become an exclusively meat, parve, and vegetarian dining hall. The menu will change seasonally and have daily specials and combo meals.  Students will be involved in helping to set and adapt the menus throughout the year.

• Falk Dining Commons will offer exclusively a la carte options. Instead of spending a meal swipe and kosher surcharge to get into the dining hall, the room will be open for all and students will pay with dining dollar$, cash, credit or PennCash (like Houston Hall).

• On Shabbat and holidays, students will have the additional option of paying for meals with a meal swipes and a surcharge.

• The University will work with Hillel staff and students to update Faulk Dining Commons in a way that fosters community.

• Hillel is looking into ways to subsidize Shabbat dinners in order to keep prices down and to make the Shabbat experience at Penn Hillel, warm, friendly, and accessible to everyone. To facilitate this process. The reservation process for the Sabbath and holiday meals will also be enhanced to better prepare for those who want to have the ease of not cooking in their residences.

There will also be some changes options available to students through the University dining plan. For freshmen who wish to keep kosher on a regular basis, we will work with them individually on a plan that best supports their needs. For upperclass students, the existing Good to Go Plan as well as a new dining dollar$-only plan (ATM plan) being introduced this year will allow them to dine more easily at Falk as well as take advantage of the kosher options that will continue to be available at other campus dining locations such as Houston Market and Gourmet Grocer.

More details, including sample menus, will be available on the dining website in the coming weeks and a special grand opening will be held in the fall.

Based on student feedback and the changing food culture on campus, it is clear that while students enjoy the sense of community and the high quality kosher selections, they also want flexibility in how, when and where they choose to dine. We believe the changes at Falk reflect those evolving preferences.  We are excited to introduce these new offerings and thank the Hillel community and Bon Appétit for working to develop this exciting new program.   The kosher dining program has a proud tradition at Penn and we are confident that the café at Falk will continue to be one of the premiere Kosher dining facilities on any campus and warm and welcoming home for Jewish life on campus.

Sincerely,

Rabbi Mike Uram            Pam Lampitt
